Giuseppe Arcimboldo c. 1575, was a painter in the classical style who also was a a keen observer as well as celebrated wit. Arcimboldo created composite portraits that were both enjoyed as jokes and taken very seriously as minutely detailed renderings of plants and animals—”serious jokes,” one historian calls them.
